The Central Mass. Rail Trail is in development as a continuous trail for hiking and biking from Boston to Western Mass.
It is incomplete, but several sections in the Wachusett area are now open to hikers, bicyclists and cross-country skiers. The surface of this trail is generally excellent, with smooth gravel and stone dust trails with little elevation.
