2026 Bonsai Workshop
We had a blast at our hands-on Bonsai workshop on Tuesday, March 31st.
Carol Schrader led the group through the art of shaping and styling.
The stars of the show were the Jade trees—perfect for beginners and naturally gifted with cool, thick trunks.
We spent the evening trimming roots, pruning foliage, and getting our hands in the dirt.
Everyone walked out the door with a completed, custom masterpiece ready for its new home. It was the perfect mix of zen and "hands-on" fun!
We learned that Jades are the ultimate easy-going Bonsai—growing thick, sturdy trunks and looking sharp whether they’re hanging out indoors or soaking up the summer sun outside. Everyone walked away with a finished masterpiece and the skills to keep it thriving!

A Message from Liz Johnson:
My mother-in-law, Tsang Chin-Ying Ding.
Born in Canton in 1917, she was a (rare) college graduate. She and her husband were both journalists and advocates for Chiang Kai-Shek and the Nationalist Party. When the Communists won, the family chose to emigrate to Hawai'i instead of Taiwan for the sake of their four children. They had an 'anchor baby' after they got here, just in case, who is a retired biochemistry professor. She is a personal hero, so I named my new bonsai (pensai) after her. -- Liz ♥️😊
